The route from Augstenberg to Pfälxer with Naafkopf behind

Route 6: Schönberg

Time required: 4 to 5 hours

The route starts from the Parkplatzordnung in Malbun at a height of 1599m and leads through forest and across high altitude meadows before reaching the summit of Schönberg, 2104m, excellent views provide ample reward throughout the walk. From the car park, walk up the tarmac road that runs alongside the Alpen Hotel Malbun towards the church. After around 100m a sign points the way onto a gravel path to the left. The path is well made and winds its way along the hillside through a forest. It is not too long before a track is reached and we turn right to follow the track out of the trees. Shortly after passing a timber shelter, turn left onto a path signed Schönberg and past two benches. The path is easily distinguishable as it climbs gradually to cross a broad ridge. The summit of Schönberg is clearly visible on the right.

A 90° lefthand bend is reached after which we turn right at the T junction. The path narrows as it zigzags uphill to follow an eroded route across the slopes of Stachlerkopf. Extreme care should be taken on the scree and late lying snow may be encountered though a grassy ridge is soon reached with the summits of Alpspitz and Kuegrat clearly visible to the left and Galinakopf to the right. Follow this path past a sign at 2050m to the summit cross of Schönberg and enjoy the views.

Following a well earned rest descend to the sign at 2050m and turn right towards Steg. The path is narrow but extremely well marked as it contours across the mountainside to a rocky point. Walk to the right hand side of the rocks and follow the path steeply downhill aiming for the lakes at Steg. The path is steep and eroded but the way ahead is assisted by timber steps until a sign is reached at Barg, 1714m. At the signpost turn left follow the path to an alp building. Turning right allows a steep descent to Steg, however, we continue straight ahead towards Säss.

The path ahead is a nice balcony walk with excellent views to Malbun through the trees until Sass Stall is reached. Continue past the building and uphill on the track to a T junction. Turn right and follow the track as it descends to meet the main road near to the lower car parks of Malbun. Turn left and follow the road back up to the village where well earned refreshments can be obtained along with souvenirs.
